Should the County introduce more two-way cycling on our one-way streets?

by Paul Saunders on 27 July, 2016

Yet more consultation, this time on whether to permit two-way cycling in the remaining one-way streets which don’t already have it.

For a considerable number of years two-way cycling has been allowed in some streets that are one way for cars.  These included Hope Street and several over the bridge in Petersfield.

A year or so back, several streets in Romsey joined this rather select group.  Belgrave Road, Cockburn Street, Fairfax Road and the northern half of Ross Street (from St Philip’s Road to the barriers) were all made into two-way for cyclists while remaining one way for cars.

In spite of some people’s fears, there do not appear to have been any drastic consequences.  Some cyclists even say they feel safer when facing the motor traffic than when it comes up behind them.

The County Council (as the highway authority) are now proposing to turn the rest of the one way streets into two-way for cyclists while keeping them one way for motor vehicles.

These roads include Argyle Street, Sedgwick Street, Catharine Street, Thoday Street,  the southern half of Ross Street,  Hemingford Road and several the other side of the bridge in Petersfield.

As it has worked in the other streets, it is hard to see what the objections would be – and the advantage to cyclists of not having to go round long loops, is obvious.

Consultation finishes on Friday 29th July.
