A Conservative decision to cut funding for cold-weather gritting across Cambridgeshire will affect several roads in the area.
Two important criteria used to determine which roads need gritting have been removed – bus routes and schools. As a consequence, Coleridge, Birdwood and Radegund Roads will not be gritted, along with many other roads around Cambridgeshire.
“I am extremely concerned at the havoc this could cause” said local campaigner, Simon Cooper. “Radegund and Birdwood have three schools between them and Coleridge is an important through route. Stopping the gritting of these roads will make it more dangerous for children going to and from school.
“This could have been avoided had the County Conservatives chosen to raise the council tax by the 2% the government allowed and expected last April – a policy the Lib Dems championed. The majority of residents I have spoken to, would be prepared to pay an extra 45p a week for this.”
