LHI application results

by Simon Cooper on 24 March, 2017

Over the winter, the Lib Dem team submitted two applications to the Local Highways Improvement scheme run by the County Council. One was to improve the safety of the zebra crossing on Vinery Road by raising it up as another speed bump, the second was to add double yellow lines to the junction of Hobart and Suez Roads to stop people parking on the junction and hindering visibility round the junction.

Unfortunately, despite strong support from the community for both schemes, the committee scoring the proposals for Cambridge City didn’t rate them high enough to qualify for funding. This is particularly concerning for the crossing on Vinery Road, as this means drivers will continue to speed along that road, right over the crossing, next to Romsey Rec.

However, the committee did approve a separate plan for the junction of Hobart and Suez Roads, submitted by an existing City Councillor – to install a crossing across the junction, tidy up the barriers, and to improve the visual appearance of the greenery on the junction. This will help children going to Ridgefield School on Suez Road, but it remains to be seen if this will solve the issue of people parking on the junction itself.

It is disappointing that the committee did not rate the improvements high enough to qualify for funding, as we believe there are significant safety concerns on both roads. We will continue to look for ways to improve the safety of these and other junctions in the area.
