City Council news release from 17 October 2014
A Cambridge landlord has been fined £30,000, ordered to pay full costs of £1,250 and a victim surcharge of £120 for putting tenants at risk by renting out unsafe houses in multiple cccupation (HMO) within the city.
Following investigations by Cambridge City Council, the landlord was fined at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 16 October 2014 for poor management of four HMOs and pleaded guilty to all 46 offences under the Management of Houses in Multiple Occupation (England) Regulations 2006.
Environmental Health carried out inspections of the properties in Mill Road and York Street and uncovered unsafe living conditions and poor management throughout the properties. Of particular concern was the fire safety in the dwellings, dangerous electrics and poor security.
Cambridge City Council will take enforcement action against landlords who continue to put their tenants’ lives at risk.
Anyone with a concern about the condition of their private rented property can call the Environmental Health team on 01223 457900.
