Public exhibitions: residents’ views welcome on The Lakes Recreation Project

by Paul Saunders on 21 February, 2015

Two public exhibitions are being held for residents of Cambridge to contribute to proposals for opening up the Cambridge Lakes.

The first exhibition will be held on
Saturday 28 February from 11.00am until 4pm
at the David Lloyd Centre on Coldham’s Lane
.

The second event will take place on
Monday 2 March from 5.30pm to 8.30pm
at Queen Emma Primary School, Gunhild Way.

The Anderson Group, a family-owned construction and property company, jointly owns the lakes with Cambridge City Council and Peterhouse College.

The company’s and the Council’s ambition is to open up the two lakes to the public. Initial proposals are being worked up in line with the Council’s emerging Local Plan, which establishes broad principles for future development up to 2031, and have been informed by discussions with both the Council and the community.

The Anderson Group also owns the former landfill sites between the railway and Coldham’s Lane. These have also been identified by the Council as having an important role to play in the area’s regeneration by being re-developed for recreational and commercial uses.

Craig Rought, Development Director for the Anderson Group, said:

“We recognise that there is a lot of interest from across the city in the future of the lakes. They’re currently closed to the public but are, potentially, a great asset for local people and visitors to Cambridge.

“We are very grateful to the community leaders and the Cambridge Lakes Group for the work they have undertaken to start local discussion about future use of the lakes. Residents’ comments have focused on opening up the lakes to a variety of different community activities.

“Our aim is to use their work as a starting point and draw as many Cambridge residents as possible into the discussion about the lakes’ future.”

The proposals will also be available online at www.lakesrecreation.co.uk for public viewing from Monday 2 March.
Residents can also sign up for updates via the project website.
