Get your green fingers on free compost on Friday 29 May (outside ASDA in the Beehive Centre)

by Paul Saunders on 28 May, 2015

News release from Cambridge City Council (26 May 2015):

The City Council is holding a compost give-away to thank residents for their recycling efforts and to mark Compost Awareness Week ~
“We’d like to thank residents for using their green bins to recycle food and garden waste. The compost that is produced from this waste is a valuable resource that’s perfect for gardens or allotments and growing fruit, vegetables or ornamental plants.”

The free soil improver will be available to residents from outside ASDA in the Beehive Centre car park on Friday 29 May from 9am until 3pm or until the compost runs out.
Residents are asked to bring their own bags or containers and be willing to shovel, although Recycling Champions will be on hand to help. They will also be able to give tips on home composting and recycling. Kitchen caddies will be available for residents to help them recycle food waste at home.

The soil improver is made from garden and food waste collected from green bins or brown sacks. The soil improver can be dug into any garden or allotment. It will add slow-release nutrients to the soil, and provide organic matter to improve soil structure and water retention.
The compost is too rich on its own to be used as potting compost for seeds or seedlings, and needs to be mixed with ordinary soil – one part soil to one part compost.

If you can’t make it to the event on the day, the free soil improver is available for the public to collect free of charge at Waterbeach Waste Management Park, Ely Road, Waterbeach, CB25 9PQ. There is no assistance in loading the soil improver so residents need to bring their own spade or shovel and sacks or a small trailer.
