For weeks, the pavements in Romsey have been blocked with barriers, piles of rubble and deep holes as Balfour Beatty puts in the new street-lights.

First they put the barriers up, then they dig the holes, then they put the new posts in, then they connect the electricity … and so far, that is all. We are promised that – eventually – they will come round and fill in the holes.  Rumour has it that the Contract allows eight weeks for it to be completed.

“The slowness of all this is unbelievable,” said Nichola Martin, candidate in the County by-election,  “I’ve spoken to residents across the ward who are having the same issue with the state of the roads. When I am elected, I shall endeavour to avoid such loose contracts such as this one with Balfour Beatty.”

 

“Balfour Beatty have a customer liaison team,” said Councillor Catherine Smart, “I have tried to contact them to ask when we can have our pavements back.  When I contacted them earlier about getting a shield on a lamp shining straight into someone’s bedroom, they responded well, but I have heard nothing so far this time.  I will carry on trying.  We really need all this to be fixed.  it is not as though it is easy walking round Romsey at the best of times and this makes it all so much more difficult.”
