As most people who use the road will have noticed, the work on the street-lights’ replacement programme in Coldhams Lane has been stopped for some time. The County Council’s contractor, Balfour-Beatty, replaced some lights but not all then seemed to disappear.
Councillor Catherine Smart contacted Balfour-Beatty to ask what was happening and when the task would be completed.
Apparently the delays on Coldham’s Lane centre round the quality of the main cable. When they started the work on the new street lights, Balfour-Beatty noticed that the cable was poor and they decided that, in the long term, it would not be up to the job.
Catherine comments, “I am sure you will all agree with me that, while the delays are irritating, getting a main cable problem dealt with at this stage seems sensible. We don’t want a major failure in the middle of next winter!
I was told that they hoped to be back by the end of March but I was not given a finish date.
However, I am glad to see that there are signs of activity re-starting, a tad earlier than I expected – so we all must hope that it goes through smoothly and quickly from now on!”
