No-one can say that this is the most attractive place for young children to play in Romsey at the moment, and there is no doubt that it has been misused in the past, which does not add to its charms.

But all is about to change!

The line of the Chisholm Trail, that cyclists’ north-south highway through the city, will pass just west of it,  providing the natural surveillance it has always lacked.

Seizing the opportunity, Cllr Catherine Smart put it forward for Environment Improvement money and this was accepted at a recent East Area Committee meeting.

Catherine commented, “I knew there would be Chisholm Trail money for environment improvements but, when I checked, I discovered that it would not stretch to places like the Great Eastern Street play area that were off the line.  So I decided to go for an allocation from the Environment Improvement money-pot.

When the list of bids came out, I was surprised to see that it was the only one in Romsey.  None of the Labour councillors had proposed anything.  So, with the welcome amendment of the addition of a Community Notice Board, it went through without question.”
