The expected planning application for the Labour Club on the corner of Mill Road and Coleridge Road has now gone in (see 16/0821/FUL). The developer has consulted with residents over a considerable period and, though he has not done everything people wanted, his efforts are to be commended.
The historic façade of the Club will be preserved.
The Coleridge Road side will be seen along-side the Ruth Bagnell flats, which are considerably taller, allowing for more height in the new building.
It was expected that there would be some kind of continuing community use on the ground floor and this will take the form of space for a nursery which Patacake are planning to expand into. A nursery was first suggested by former councillor Paul Saunders then taken up by others. This is welcome as more provision for pre-school places is still needed in Romsey.
As expected, the main part will be student flats, which is a disappointment as Romsey really needs family housing.
Former Councillor Catherine Smart says, “I asked for a review of the provision of accommodation for students last Autumn. Had my request been taken up at the time, we would now be in a better position to know how much we really need. Having to say “I told you so, is a bit sad.”
Consultation on the plans will last until 17th June and the case officer is Rob Brereton.
